How To Find a System That Works For You
from: Andrew Traubdo, everyone needs to be organized to a certain extent. The way in which you
get organized depends a great deal on the sort of person you are. You may
happily leave everything in a mess for weeks or months on end, then have one
really good clean up that will take several days. If this is what works for
you, fine. Don't let someone else persuade you to do it differently. On the
other hand, if that is what you do, but it's not really working, you'll need to
find a system that is easy to do and suits your personality too, so that you
are actually happy doing it.
It's all very well to say
this is how it should be done, but if you really hate doing it that way, you're
not going to do it successfully because we all put off doing what we hate. So
think about how you like to do things. You might prefer to clean up once a week
for a few hours. Or perhaps you can't bear a mess at all so you clean up every
day. If that's you, there's no need to read any further!
Everyone has a different
personality. The main thing is to work with whatever suits you best. You might
find that living in a mess really gets you down, yet you hate cleaning it up.
In that case it might suit you to discipline your time to do one or two hours
of housework in the morning, then reward yourself by doing things you really
like in the afternoon. If you get stuck into it properly, you'll be amazed at
what you can accomplish. It can be fun to time yourself, then see if you can
achieve a personal best. For instance, how long does it take to make the bed?
Five minutes? See if you can get it down in four minutes. If you really hurry
you might even do it in three.
With doing housework,
sometimes it helps to pretend visitors are coming. Especially if you know they
are critical people. You'll rush around and have everything spick and span in
no time flat. Another trick is to set priorities. Do the important things first
and don't sweat the small stuff. Some people hate cooking with children underfoot.
They could decide to cook the evening meal through the day so that it only
needs to be re-heated in the evening. On the other hand, if you love to do
activities with your children, you might rather involve them in the cooking so
that you are all working together.
Whatever system you decide
on, make sure it is one that suits you that you are happy with. Life is too
short to use it doing things in a way that makes you miserable.
